A chat app that answers to the people in it

Voxara is built and run by a small team on a single server we control. Here is what that lets us promise, plainly, and where the limits are.

No ads. No data sales. Ever.

There is no advertising in Voxara and no advertising model behind it. We do not sell, share or rent personal data. The only optional paid thing is Voxara Plus, which adds cosmetics and conveniences; everything you need to talk, call, share and moderate is free and stays free.

Calls are peer to peer

Voice, video and screen shares go directly between the people in the call. They never pass through our server and are never stored. The honest flip side: peer to peer means people in a call with you can technically see your IP address, like any peer-to-peer call; a relay for people who prefer not to share it is on the roadmap.

Your data has buttons

Export everything (Settings, Advanced) and delete your account (Settings, Account) yourself, instantly, no ticket. The Privacy Policy lists exactly what we store, who can see it and for how long, written against the code rather than a template.

We are honest about direct messages

Direct messages are private to the people in them and encrypted on disk, but they are not end-to-end encrypted. Voxara can read them when a report or the law requires it, and only then. We would rather say that clearly than imply a guarantee we cannot keep.

Security you can use

Two-factor authentication with backup codes, sign-in alerts from new places, passwords hashed with scrypt, encrypted storage, and a public write-up of every security review in the app's own repository. It is a young service; we treat every report seriously and say what we fixed.

The app is open source

Everything that runs on your computer is public: the desktop app, the bot SDK and the example bots, under the Apache 2.0 licence at github.com/VoxaraSpace/VoxaraSpace. That is where the security claims on this page can be checked rather than believed. The server stays private, because it holds the moderation and anti-abuse logic, and the people it is there to stop should not get to study it.

Build on it

Bots and webhooks are first-class: a JavaScript SDK, slash commands, rich embeds, ready-made GitHub and GitLab templates, and documentation for any language. Bots carry a visible mark and declare what they do.

Questions people ask

Is Voxara free?

Yes. Everything you need to talk, call, share and moderate is free and stays free. Voxara Plus is an optional paid tier for cosmetics and conveniences only.

What does it run on?

A Windows app (Windows 10 and 11), and the same app in any modern browser at voxaraspace.com/app, including on a phone. There is no dedicated phone app yet.

Are messages encrypted?

In transit, always (TLS). At rest on the server, yes (AES-256-GCM), for messages and uploaded files. They are not end-to-end encrypted: the server decrypts them to deliver them, so Voxara can read them when a report or the law requires it.

Can I run my own Voxara server?

No. Voxara is a hosted service; the server code is private so its moderation and anti-abuse systems cannot be studied by the people they exist to stop. The app itself is open source.

How do voice and video calls work?

Peer to peer, encrypted with DTLS-SRTP, straight between the people in the call. The server only helps them find each other and never receives audio or video.

Who can see what I do on Steam?

Only your friends, and only if you link your Steam account, which is optional. What you are playing and your game cards can be hidden in Settings, and the link can be removed at any time.

When does it launch?

Sunday 27 September 2026. Until then, sign-up is open to beta testers, who keep a permanent badge.

What it is not (yet)

There is no phone app, though the web app works in a phone browser. Calls have no relay yet. Video is 1:1 and small groups, not hundreds. We publish every change in the changelog and every incident on the status page.
